In 2019, he made 15 pitches, the last five of which were starts, and established himself as a key player on the pitching team in his rookie season. Before injuring himself against No. 22 Arizona, he had pitched 5.0 innings or more in five straight appearances, scoring most of them as longer relief. After almost a month out, he returned to the mound with a scoreless inning against Washington and hit a career-best seven-batter performance in 5.2 scoreless innings against San Francisco.
In a 2-1 win over Saint Mary’s, he hit a season-best 7.0 innings by hitting four batters while giving up only three singles and a walk. He earned his only win against #12 Stanford by beating the only hitter he saw and threw 1.2 innings scoreless the next day to help Cal win for the first time since 2014 and threw 2.0 hitless innings in Cal’s 10-3 win over #10 Oregon.
Sam led all pitchers in the Pac-12 in 2022 with 38 strikeouts while walking just eight, and ranked 12th nationally with 1.21 walks allowed per nine innings. He started the year as a No. 4 starter for Cal before moving to the bullpen and eventually moving to weekend rotation.
