Sig was born on April 28, 1966 in Seattle, Washington. HSigurd Jonny Hansen, the firstborn of three siblings – Norman and Edgar, hails from Seattle, where he was born and raised. His father, Sverre Hansen, came from a long line of fishermen with Norwegian ancestry. Sverre and his father pioneered the practice of opilio crab fishing in Alaska, enabling crab boats to generate income year-round instead of only during short or late-year seasons.
Sigurd began his fishing journey at the age of 14, working on his family’s boat. After completing high school, he started fishing full-time, spending an average of 10 months per year in Alaska and the Bering Sea. During the summer, he would occasionally fish for mackerel and cod in Norway.
