Early life
Born on July 3, 1997, in Chariton, Iowa, T. J. Hockenson grew up in Cherokee during his early years but later moved back to his hometown during his high school years. Tod Hockenson is his father, Teri Hockenson is his mother and he has three siblings, Kelsey, Matt, and Andy Hockenson. Hockenson completed his high school education at Chariton High School where he was actively involved in football and basketball. He later attended the University of Iowa to further his college football career. In 2019 he completed his studies.

Hockenson has always been interested in sports, but he started thinking about developing himself with football. He had an amazing high school career, where he was a four-time letter winner and played as a tight end and defensive back. Thomas led the team to the state playoffs and was also named an All-State First Team in his senior year. He was recruited by the University of Iowa and joined the Iowa Hawkeyes college football team.
In college, he joined the team as a tight end and played in the starting XI. He showed successful performances and proved to be an asset to the team. The best game in his freshman year was against Ohio State, where he rushed for 71 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also recorded the team’s fifth-best statistic that same year. In his sophomore year, he won the Big Ten’s Tight End of the Year Award and the Kwalick Clark Award.
NFL
In 2019, he entered the 2019 NFL Draft and was drafted in the first round by the Detroit Lions. He began playing as a tight end for the Lions, rushing for 131 yards in a game against Arizona — the most for a debut in NFL history. The following year, he was placed on the reserves due to injury but returned and put on an amazing performance against the Chicago Bears and Atlanta Falcons.
After his remarkable performance, he was named to the 2021 Pro Bowl. In the 2021 season, he was again reserved due to injury. The following year, in the game against the Seattle Seahawks, he set an all-time Lions record for 179 yards and 8 receptions. Later in 2022 he was traded to the Minnesota Vikings.
