Early life
Ubah Hassan was born in Somalia in 1983. Hassan’s mother and two sisters left war-torn Somalia for Ethiopia in 1991. Hassan, her father, and younger brother stayed in Somalia until they emigrated to Kenya in 1994. Hassan moved to Canada when she was fifteen to join her mother and sisters who had already traveled there. Her family spent a year in a homeless shelter after moving to Canada.

Ubah began her modeling career in Vancouver and Toronto after a photographer spotted her skills when she was just seventeen. She was also a diner owner while living in Vancouver. In 2007 she signed with Click Model Management in New York City. There she began appearing in magazine spreads and on catwalk shows.
Hassan was named model of the week by Model.com back in May 2008. She appeared twice in Vogue Italia, first in the July 2008 issue of Black, photographed by Steven Meisel, and again in the January 2009 issue of Soul Kitchen, photographed by Bruce Weber. She even appeared in the Spring/Summer 2009 advertising campaign for Ralph Lauren.
