Anthony DeSclafani career
DeSclafani was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 22nd round of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft. Despite being offered a contract bonus of around $200,000, he chose to attend the University of Florida and play college baseball for the Florida Gators instead. While attending college in 2010, he spent his summers playing baseball for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod Baseball League.
MLB
DeSclafani was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the sixth round of the 2011 MLB Draft. He received a contract bonus of $250,000. In 2012, he was a pitcher for the Midwest League’s Class A Lansing Lugnuts.
The Blue Jays sent DeSclafani, Adeiny Hechavarria, Henderson Ivarez, Yunel Escobar, Jeff Mathis, Justin Nicolino, and Jake Marisnick to the Marlins after the 2012 season. In return, they received Mark Buehrle, Josh Johnson, José Reyes, John Buck, and Emilio Bonifacio.
DeSclafani pitched for the Class A-Advanced Florida State League’s Jupiter Hammerheads and the Class AA Southern League’s Jacksonville Suns in 2013. He had a total of 9 wins, 6 losses, and a 2.65 ERA between the two levels. The Miami Marlins recognized him as their top minor league pitcher after the season.
Anthony was part of Jacksonville’s opening squad in 2014. On May 14 against the Dodgers in Los Angeles, he was called up by the Marlins and won his first major league game. DeSclafani had two hits and seven strikeouts. DeSclafani was sent back to the AAA Pacific Coast League class New Orleans Zephyrs on August 16, 2014, when Henderson Alvarez was coming back.
Anthony was ejected for the first time in his Major League Baseball career on September 11, 2014, after hitting Milwaukee Brewers hitter Carlos Gómez with a pitch. MLB announced DeSclafani’s three-game suspension and one undisclosed penalty the following day. The Marlins traded DeSclafani and Chad Wallach to the Reds on December 11, 2014, in exchange for Mat Latos.
Rise to Fame
It was DeSclafani’s 3-2 win over the Cubs on April 14, 2015, that marked the Reds’ first win of the year and the first win by a starting pitcher. He made 31 starts for the Reds and finished with a 9-13 record. The following year, he only made 20 starts due to multiple appearances on the injured list, but still managed a record of 9-5.
DeSclafani’s right elbow hurt early in spring 2017 training. He had to be suspended from training due to a diagnosis of tendinitis. It later emerged that he was on the injury list earlier in the year after injuring his elbow at UCL. After sending him to a minor league rehab trip in late July, his tendinitis flared up again and forced him to abandon his assignment. The recovery of his UCL was done. With his placement on MLB’s 60-Day Injury List, his season was practically over before it even started.
DeSclafani was activated for the starting XI on June 5, 2018, against the Colorado Rockies after being sidelined for more than two years due to multiple injuries. During a June 23 game against the Chicago Cubs, DeSclafani scored a grand slam against Brian Duensing. The last Reds reliever to score a grand slam was Bob Purkey, who did so in 1959 against the Cubs. DeSclafani started for the Reds and took the win as they defeated the Cubs 11-2.
