When the St. Louis Cardinals selected Gomber in the fourth round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft, they gave him a $374,100 bonus to sign with the team. His first stint was with the State College Spikes of the New York-Penn League’s Class A short season, where he won 2-2 in 11 games with a 2.30 ERA and 36 strikeouts. In 2015, Gomber was named a Midwest League All-Star while pitching for the Peoria Chiefs. He finished the year with a league-best record of 15-3, 2.67 ERA, 140 strikeouts, and a batting average of .198 opponents.

Gomber was a top pitcher in the AFL, ending the year with a 5-1 record, seven wins, and a 2.14 earned run average in seven starts. The year 2017 was Gombers with Springfield. Gomber’s 1.92 ERA in his last 10 games for Springfield came after a difficult first half of the season. In 2017, he made 26 starts and finished the year with a 10-7 record, 3.34 ERA, and 1.17 WHIP. He was drafted into the Cardinals’ 40-man roster after the season ended to keep him out of the Rule 5 draft.
On April 29, 2018, the Cardinals called Gomber of Memphis to a long relief pitch from the bullpen. He finished the season at St. Louis, where he appeared in 29 games (11 starts) and posted a 6-2 record, 4.44 ERA, and 1.51 WHIP. In 2018, the Memphis Redbirds were Gombers’ first team. Gomber equaled Lance Lynn’s 2010 Redbirds franchise record for most strikeouts in a game at 16, which he set against the Iowa Cubs on April 23, 2018.
