Tyrese Haliburton is a professional basketball player for the Indiana Pacers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He attended Iowa State University and was selected by the Sacramento Kings in the 2020 NBA Draft. As part of a 2022 trade package for Domantas Sabonis, the Indiana Pacers acquired Haliburton. He was selected as an East reserve player for his first All-Star game in 2023.
Early life
Tyrese Haliburton was born on February 29, 2000, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He was raised in a basketball family as both his mother and father were Division III players at Iowa State. Tyree started playing basketball at the age of three and soon developed a passion for it.
As a freshman at Iowa State, he set the program’s assist record in a single game. Despite a wrist injury that ended the season, he was a breakthrough sophomore and was nominated to the second-team All-Big 12 Conference. At the 2019 FIBA World Under-19 Championship in Heraklion, Greece, Haliburton led the USA to a gold medal and was named to the tournament’s All-Tournament Team.

Haliburton represented Oshkosh North High School in Wisconsin basketball. As a sophomore, he was selected for the defense team and second team for the Fox Valley Association (FVA) All-Stars. Haliburton averaged 18 points, six assists, and five rebounds per game as a junior and was named FVA Player of the Year as well as the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division I All-State honor, despite his team only just behind the state Tournament lagged behind.
In the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division, I won the state championship over Brookfield East High School, which was his team’s first state championship. He has received awards including Wisconsin Gatorade Player of the Year, FVA Co-Player of the Year, and Oshkosh North-Western All-Area Player of the Year. NBA
The Sacramento Kings selected Haliburton as the 12th pick in the first round of the 2020 NBA draft. The Kings announced Haliburton’s signing on November 27, 2020. Haliburton’s first NBA game was on December 23, 2020. In overtime, his club defeated the Denver Nuggets 124-122 with his help from the bench.
Haliburton suffered a left knee injury on May 2, 2021, in the game against the Dallas Mavericks. Although a subsequent MRI showed Haliburton’s ligaments were unharmed, the Kings announced he would sit out the final seven games of the 2020–21 season for safety reasons. Haliburton received the third most Rookie of the Year votes and was named to the NBA’s All-Rookie First Team.
On January 29, 2022, the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Kings 103-101. 38 points, seven assists, three rebounds, and two steals were career highs for Haliburton. He also added three boards and two steals. With a career-high 17 assists, 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals against the Oklahoma City Thunder on February 5, Haliburton defeated them (113-103).
On February 8, 2022, the Pacers acquired Haliburton, Buddy Hield, and Tristan Thompson in exchange for Domantas Sabonis, Justin Holiday, Jeremy Lamb, and a 2023 second-round pick. On February 11, Haliburton’s first game with the Pacers, they played the Cleveland Cavaliers and lost 120-113. He finished the game with 23 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals. Haliburton and Desmond Bane won the 2022 Clorox Clutch Challenge, held for the 75th time during the 2022 NBA All-Star Weekend.
2024 Olympics
Tyrese Haliburton has celebrated winning an Olympic gold medal with Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics, despite having limited playing time. The U.S. men’s basketball team secured their fifth consecutive gold medal by defeating France 98-87. Haliburton, who played a total of 26 minutes across three games, did not participate in the gold medal game itself, which led him to humorously reflect on his experience on social media. He posted a photo of himself with the medal, joking, “When you ain’t do nun on the group project and still get an A”.
