Mesha Mainor is an American politician and physical therapist. Mainor announced her move from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party on July 11. The state representative for District 56 in Georgia said she was expelled from the Democratic Party for violating party doctrine on issues such as school choice and criminal justice reform. Mainor added that she liked the Republican Party because it represented a diversity of ideas and alternative policy proposals.
Early life
Mesha Mainor was born on May 17, 1975, in Atlanta, Georgia. She earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in physical therapy from Howard University in Washington, DC in 1996. She received her bachelor’s degree in physical therapy from Alabama State University in 2012.
Mainor has been a practicing physician and consultant for more than 20 years. She had particular expertise in telemedicine, home health care, and geriatrics. In addition, Mainor has served as an adjunct professor at Morehouse School of Medicine and Georgia State University.
Mesha Mainor Career
Mainor ran as a Democrat for the Georgia House of Representatives for District 56 in 2020. She eliminated two other candidates in the primary and received 51.8% of the vote. Mainor, the first black woman in the district, won the general election unopposed. Mainor ran for office to improve the quality of life for her constituents, particularly elders, veterans, and children. She wanted to address issues such as healthcare, education, economic development, and public safety.
However, Mainor soon found herself at odds with her fellow Democrats over some of her positions and actions. She was the only Democrat to support a bill that would allow students to use public funds to attend private rather than public schools. Mainor supported a measure that would have given courts the power to bar district attorneys from trials for misconduct or negligent breach of their duties.
Mainor has also had disagreements with several Democratic leaders over committee duties and campaign contributions. She faced backlash and harassment from her party for going against the party’s orthodoxy. She was threatened with supporting a key opponent against her, and Democrats sought to sabotage her work and publicly slandered her. At a press conference in front of the Georgia Capitol on July 11, 2023, Mainor announced her decision to join the Republican Party.
Mainor felt that their principles and the programs of the Republican Party were more compatible. She said she wants to join a party that values different points of view and different policy proposals. With Mainor’s move, the Republicans now control the House of Representatives by a vote of 102 to 78. She is the first black Republican to serve in the Georgia General Assembly and the only black Republican among Georgia’s 236 legislatures.
