Rick Rieder is Chief Investment Officer of Global Fixed Income at BlackRock. He also serves as Managing Director, Head of the Fundamental Fixed Income Business and Head of the Global Allocation Investment Team. He is responsible for approximately $2.4 trillion in assets at his company. He was a member of BlackRock’s Executive Sub-Committee on Investments, Chair of the BlackRock Investment Council and of BlackRock’s Global Operating Committee.
Early life
Rick belongs to the family of entrepreneurs as his father started an office supplies business while his mother started a chain of chocolate shops. Born and raised in Scarsdale, New York, he developed an interest in investing and risk management while still at school. Rick earned a BBA in Finance from Emory University in 1983. He later went to the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School in 1987 to receive his MBA degree.
He is currently a board member of Emory University. Aside from these positions, he is also a Fellow of Emory’s Business School, an active member of the University’s Finance Committee and also serves as Vice Chair of the Investment Committee. He is also associated with the business school’s BBA investment fund and holds the position of Founder and Chair.
Rick Rieder’s career
Mr. Rieder joined BlackRock in 2009. Prior to joining, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of R3 Capital Partners. He was also an active member of the Borrowing Committee for the US Treasury, where he served as the committee’s vice chairman. He was also a member of the Federal Reserve’s Investment Advisory Committee on Financial Markets.
He is one of the outstanding personalities that has ever been seen in the business world. He was nominated for an Outstanding Portfolio Manager by Morningstar in 2021. He was later honored with Institutional Investor’s 2015 Global Unconstrained Fixed Income Manager of the Year award. He was also nominated for Fixed Income Manager of the Year by Institutional Investor for 2014.
Mr. Rieder manages the four fund categories, including Strategic Global Bond, Total Return, Fixed Income Global Opportunities and Strategic Income Opportunities. He has been awarded gold medals by Morningstar. Before assuming all of these corporate and fund positions, he was head of the Global Principal Strategies team and a global proprietary investment platform at Lehman Brothers.
He worked at Lehman Brothers from 1987 to 2008. He also previously served as global head of the firm’s lending business, member of the Board of Trustees of the Company’s Pension Plan, Chairman of the Corporate Bond and Debt Commitment Committee. Before joining Lehman Brothers, Mr. Rieder was a credit analyst at SunTrust Banks in Atlanta.
