Early life
Dusty May, who is currently 47 years old in 2023, was born on December 30, 1976. He graduated from Eastern Greene High School in 1995. As a student, May managed Indiana University’s men’s basketball team. After graduating, he began his career as an administrative assistant/video coordinator at USC from 2000-2002. He returned to Indiana and worked in an administrative role for three seasons before taking his first steps as an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan (2005-06). In addition, May worked as an assistant at Murray State (2006-07) and UAB (2007-09).

As an assistant coach and assistant head coach at Louisiana Tech, May spent six seasons from 2009 through 2015. In his final season with the Bulldogs, the team recorded 27-9, including 15-3 in C-USA, and won the regular-season championship with two games and an unbeaten record of 17-0 on their home court. LA Tech demonstrated their dominance at home, winning 49 out of 50 games from February 2012 to the end of the 2014/15 season.
When Mike White took over the program in the 2011-12 season, Louisiana retained Tech May as an assistant. During their time there, the Bulldogs won three straight conference championships — the 2013 Western Athletic Conference title and the 2014 and 2015 C-USA crowns. After spending three years as an assistant coach in Florida, where he helped the Gators in the build With a 69-37 record and consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, May made the move to FAU.
The Gators advanced to the second round of the tournament this year after making the Elite Eight in 2017. May’s teams posted a record of 274-166 (0.623 win percent) while he was a full-time assistant. In their first season in Gainesville, the Gators rebounded from an under-500 record, finishing 21-15 and advancing to the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament.
Rise to Fame
May led the Owls to a winning record and a College Insider Tournament (CIT) appearance, their third postseason appearance in school history in his first season at the helm. C-USA Co-Sixth Man of the Year was awarded to grad forward Xavian Stapleton, and senior guard Anthony Adger made the All-C-USA Third Team. The Owls set records as a team for rebounds, rebounds per game, and free throw percentage. May’s efforts made him a finalist for the Joe B. Hall Award, given to the best freshman coach in Division I.
Dusty, in his sophomore year, led the Owls to their second straight winning season, the team’s first since the 1996-97 season. FAU won 14 home games and averaged 71.1 points per game, the team’s highest average in almost a decade. Additionally, May set a record as the fastest FAU coach with 30 wins at the DI level, and amassed 16 C-USA wins and 34 overall in his first two seasons as head coach. The campaign ended with May leading the Owls to a 66-56 win over Old Dominion in the C-USA tournament, which was FAU’s first win in a conference tournament in a neutral position since 2002.
